Minnetonka Baseball Association is a program of service to the youth of our community. It is geared to provide an outlet of healthful activity and training under good leadership in an atmosphere of wholesome community participation.

2017 League Overview

 

Minnetonka Baseball Association is a volunteer organization. Our goal is to provide a great baseball experience for players at every ability and experience level.  From Pre-K through 12th Grade there are numerous divisions of Minnetonka Baseball, each designed with the intent of building and growing a players’ skills each season.  Across all leagues, MBA emphasizes safety, teamwork, sportsmanship and, perhaps most importantly, having fun.  Each league is led by a League Coordinator, a position that reports to the MBA Director of Leagues.  Below are brief summaries of each league:

 

Options for Baseball Ages 4 – 12 (Minnetonka Baseball)

 

Teams in “Rookie” through “Community 8” will continue to be formed based on the elementary school in which the player attends. 

 

  • Community Rookie (Pre-School Program) – Baseball Age 4 & 5 and are Pre-School during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 5 and are Attending Kindergarten during the 2016-2017 school year

Introduction to the game using soft baseballs; hitting occurs via coach pitch and/or from a hitting tee (parent/player selected); all players bat through each inning and play multiple positions; neither score nor standings are kept.

  • Community 6 (Kindergarten Program) – Baseball Age 6 and are Pre-School or Kindergarten during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 5 or 7 and are Attending Kindergarten during the 2016-2017 school year.

Continued development/introduction of baseball fundamentals; soft baseballs are used; coaches pitch to their own teams; players play multiple positions; neither score nor standings are kept.

  • Community 7 (1st Grade Program) – Baseball Age 7 and are Attending Kindergarten or 1st Grade during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 6 or 8 and are Attending 1st Grade during the 2016-2017 school year.

Soft baseballs used; players play multiple positions; “sling” pitching machines will be utilized for hitting; score is kept and wins and losses are recorded for league standings; in-house, post-season in-house tournament for all teams.

  • Community 8 (2nd Grade Program – Baseball Age 8 and are Attending 1st or 2nd Grade during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 7 or 9 and are Attending 2nd Grade during the 2016-2017 school year.

Soft baseballs are used; players play multiple positions; 10 players on the field; “sling” pitching machines will be utilized for hitting; continuous batting order throughout the season; score is kept and wins and losses are recorded for league standings; in-house, post-season in-house tournament for all teams.

  • Community 9 (3rd Grade Program)  – Baseball Age 9 and are Attending 2nd or 3rd Grade during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 8 or 10 and are Attending 3rd Grade during the 2016-2017 school year.  

Hard baseballs are introduced; 1st year of “Kid-Pitch” baseball and all players are given an opportunity to pitch; players play multiple positions; 10 players on the field; continuous batting order throughout the regular season;  stealing is introduced; in-house, post-season in-house tournament for all teams.

  • Community 10/11 (4th and 5th Grade Program) – Baseball Age 10 & 11 and are Attending 4th, 5th or 6th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 9 or 12 and are Attending 4th or 5th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year..  

First year where players are separated by talent level, with tryouts required for consideration for play in the Travel.  Competitive play accelerates but 10/11 remains developmental with roughly equal playing time and all players being given the opportunity to play multiple positions in the infield and outfield. 

  • Travel 10 (4th Grade Program)  – Baseball Age 10 and are Attending 4th or 5th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 9 and are Attending 4th during the 2016-2017 school year.

Players with higher talent level distinguished via a tryout.  Tryouts are required to be considered for the Travel League.   Competitive play accelerates with age but our developmental with roughly equal playing time and all players being given the opportunity to play multiple positions in the infield and outfield. Teams are formed and players stay within that team for the remainder of the season.Teams play a 14-game regular season in the Metro Baseball League against Travel teams from other communities. Teams play in 3 to 4 regular season tournaments and possibly 2-3 postseason tournaments. 

  • Travel 11  (5th Grade Program) – BB Age 11 and are Attending 5th or 6th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year, or BB Age 10 and are Attending 5th during the 2016-2017 school year..

  • Community 12/13 year olds (6th & 7th Grade Program) - Baseball Age 12 & 13 and are Attending 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year or BB Age 11 or 14 and are Attending 6th grade or 7th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year.

Teams are formed by an equidraft. Teams play an 18-game regular season against in-house and interleague opponents and an end-of-season in-house playoff. Teams play on modified (75-80 ft bases) fields.

 

  • Community 14/15 year olds (8th & 9th Grade Program) - BB Age 14 & 15 and are Attending 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year or BB Age 13 or 16 and are Attending 8th or 9th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year. 

 

Teams are formed by an equidraft. Teams play an 18-game regular season against in-house and interleague opponents and an end-of-season in-house playoff. Teams play on regulation (90 ft bases) fields.

 

  • Community 16-18 year olds (10th thru 13th Grade Program)- Baseball Age 16, 17 & 18 and are Attending 10th thru 13th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year or BB Age 15 or 19 and are Attending 10th or 12th Grade during the 2016-2017 school year

Teams create from the remaining pool of players once the Travel Tier I teams have been selected.  Some consideration will be given to playing with friends. Teams play a 14-16 game regular season against in-house and interleague opponents.  There will be an end-of-season playoff tournament against teams from the league.

 

  • Travel Tier I – (16-18 year olds)

Four teams of players selected from Fall tryout. The remaining players will play in the Community 16-18YO Division. All Senior Babe Ruth seasons start mid-to-late May to avoid (or at least minimize) conflicts with High School baseball.

  • Mudhens (17-18 year olds)  
  • Lugnuts (16-18 year olds)  

 

  • Travel 13-15 Year Olds:

13 Year Olds - Teams selected from Fall tryout so these teams have been formed for the season. Teams play a 16-game regular season in the Metro Baseball League against Travel teams from other communities. Teams play in 4 regular season tournaments and 2-3 postseason tournaments. Teams play on modified (75-80 feet) fields.

· 13A – 1 team

· 13AA – 2 teams

· 13AAA –2 teams

14 Year Olds –Teams selected from Fall tryout so these teams have been formed for the season.  Teams play a 16-game regular season in the Metro Baseball League against Travel teams from other communities. Teams play in 4 regular season tournaments and 2-3 postseason tournaments.

· 14AA – 2 teams

· 14AAA – 1 team

15 Year Olds - Teams selected from Fall tryout tryout so these teams have been formed for the season.  Teams play a 14-game regular season in the Metro Baseball League against Travel teams from other communities. Teams play in 4 regular season tournaments and 2-3 postseason tournaments.

· 15AA – 2 teams

· 15AAA – 1 team

 

14/15 Year Olds - Teams selected from Fall tryout tryout so these teams have been formed for the season.  Teams play a 14-game regular season in the Metro Baseball League against Travel teams from other communities. Teams play in 4 regular season tournaments and 2-3 postseason tournaments.

· 14/15A – 2 teams

 

Fall Season

  • Tonka Fall Ball – Ages 8/9 & 10/11, 13+. Look for more information on this program in mid-June. The leagues give players the chance to extend their season. Practices begin mid-August and the last games are played in early October. More than 1/3 of the Spring Players participate in Fall Ball.
